Haunted by the Halloween Candy???
Haunted by the Halloween Candy
Halloween is just a few days away, and you know what that means… CANDY! Those little “Fun size”- “Bite Size” candy bars are deceiving and a trap to get you munching all day long. Picture this. You have kids, get them all dressed up, take a few pictures in their over priced Halloween costume, walk around the neighborhood till your feet hurt, and the mayhem begins. “I’ll trade you 3 tootsie rolls for your Reeses!” After the big exchange takes place, as the good parent that you are, you place the candy on the top of the fridge in a bowl and tell the kids they can have a piece a day. But this is the downfall… You’re tall enough to reach the top of the fridge.
You start off grabbing one little bite size piece in the morning, go back and grab another piece around lunch, a kit-kat sounds great for an afternoon snack, and for dinner and dessert… why not? They’re bite size, right? Before you know it, 6 of those bite size pieces makes up a full candy bar and a half!
According to an article written by NBC, Sweet and Spooky Facts About Halloween, about 90% of parents admit to dipping into their child’s stash. So, how do we monitor this monster mash for you and your kids? Here are some great tips!
- Be a role model. If you eat a bunch of candy, your kids will eat a bunch of candy.
- Buy the candy off your kids. Give them a nickle for each piece of candy they want. This will stop the calorie intake and you can get rid of the candy.
- Don’t be afraid to throw it out. The thrill of Halloween is walking around the neighborhood getting all dressed up. Don’t hesitate to get rid of the candy calorie loot.
- Monitor the amount of candy you eat, and make sure you don’t forget your healthy meals after Halloween. It’s okay to have a little candy fun for a night, but after that… don’t binge.
- Keep the candy in a place that is not visible or easily reachable. If you or your child has easy access to the candy, it’s easy to keep munching, and munching, and munching!
Help out the neighborhood and help out yourself.. Try giving out different trick-or-treat snacks such as mini bags of popcorn, granola bars, dark chocolate, trail mix, boxes of raisins, little toys, stickers, pencils… this list can be endless.
So this Halloween, be safe, be smart, and most of all… don’t let that Halloween candy haunt you the next day while you’re at the gym! 🙂
